Who has to be trained

Ontario law requires that anyone who is involved in the sale, service or sampling of alcohol, or in taking orders from customers for the sale of liquor, to complete a server training course approved by the Board of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

This requirement includes and applies to holders of a licence to deliver liquor, as well as all managers and other persons who are involved with taking liquor orders from customers or in the service or supply of liquor to customers.

Staff are encouraged to carry a copy of their certification card while they are working.  AGCO Inspectors may ask for proof of a staff member’s certification at any time.

Smart Serve® Training Program

Smart Serve® Ontario is approved by the AGCO Board to develop and provide the Smart Serve® Responsible Alcohol Beverage Training Program, and is currently the only approved sales and service training program in province of Ontario.

Please note that the AGCO still recognizes The Server Intervention Program certification issued before May 1995.

The Smart Serve® Ontario training is available online. You can complete it individually or in a group in-class session, offered by an Organization. All Final Tests are proctored and must be completed online.
