The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is revising Thoroughbred Rule 34.01 to reduce the weight allowance for Canadian-bred two-year-old horses in two-year-old races, from five pounds to three pounds.

Effective immediately, the weight allowance for Canadian-bred two-year-old horses in two-year-old races is three pounds.

Lowering the weight allowance is in line with what is permitted for three-year-old Canadian-bred horses in three-year-old races.

The AGCO is committed to the welfare of jockeys and horses and as such has made this change in consultation with the Jockeys’ Benefit Association of Canada and with the support of other key industry representatives.

New Rule:

34.01  In all races except handicaps, stakes and races where conditions expressly state to the contrary, a weight allowance of three five pounds will be made for Canadian-bred two-year-old horses in two-year-old races and three pounds for Canadian-bred three-year-old horses in three-year-old races.
